Ask a local where southern Thailand still feels like the old days, and they don't say Phuket. They say Khanom. It's a working fishing town on the Gulf coast, a few hours east of the island — past the bridge, across to the mainland, and into a part of the south the tour machinery never really reached.

No traffic. No crowds. No wall of beach clubs every hundred metres. In Khanom the fishing boats still outnumber the tourists, and on a long stretch of sand a Saturday looks like a Tuesday. The single most useful thing to know before you go is that its charm is subtractive — it's everything Phuket's loudest strip isn't.

So the one mistake to avoid is trying to turn Khanom into Phuket — hunting for the big resort strip, the party street, the postcard you already have. There isn't one, and that's the point. Come for what it is, not for what it's missing.

2. It's a sunrise town — and that quietly runs your whole day

Khanom faces east, out over the Gulf — so unlike almost every famous beach in the south, its headline light is the sunrise, not the sunset. Be on Na Dan Beach around 5:45 to 6:00am and the sun comes straight up out of the water and the whole bay turns pink and orange. It's also the gentle, calm swim beach, so the early crowd is you, a few fishermen, and the dogs.

The corollary is the useful local trick: because the coast faces east, you don't watch the sunset from the beach here. For that, you head inland — up to Khanom Hill and the western jungle roads, where the colours come down over the mountains instead. Sunrise on the sand, sunset in the hills. Plan the day around that and you've already out-localled most visitors.

3. The pink dolphins — and the morning you build around them

This is the thing that puts Khanom on the map: it's one of the few places on earth you can see pink dolphins in the wild — Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, pink from the blood vessels close to the skin. The move is an early-morning longtail: a short run past the fish farm to where they feed, when the channel is glassy and cool and the light is good. Wildlife keeps no schedule — most mornings you see them, the odd morning you don't — but the boat strings together hidden islands, fishing villages and limestone coast, so the "Thailand twenty years ago" feeling is the trip even on the rare blank day.

Khanom is a fishing town, so the rule writes itself: eat the seafood that came off the local boats that morning, and order by pointing at the day's catch rather than reading down a menu. AO Khanom Seafood, Khanom Seafood at Hat Nai Phlao, and TonYee Seafood are the rotation — fresh, unfussy, priced like a town that isn't marking up the view.

For the other moods: CC Beach Bar & Restaurant is the sunset-drinks institution — feet in the sand, cold drink, the breeze. Aalto is the closest thing to upscale, Italian and sunset cocktails, where we send couples for a date night. Restaurant Dusty Gecko is the quiet fusion standout most visitors never find, and Bai Chaplu, Lamyai Kitchen and Friends Restaurant are proper Thai with a local crowd. Mornings, Love at First Bite for coffee and breakfast.

Khanom Beach is nine-plus kilometres of nearly uninterrupted sand with almost no one on it — the walking beach, the one where you lose an hour without meaning to. Want it even quieter? Drive twenty to thirty minutes north or south of town and just explore; there are still beaches here with more fishing boats than tourists.

Inland, Khao Wang Thong Cave is the accessible one — big chambers and real formations, fine for most people. And the mountains hide a scatter of waterfalls — some a short walk, some a jungle scramble. The honest local view: the best one is whichever you have entirely to yourself. Hin Lat, Samet Chun and Ta Noi are the names we know, but they're best paired with someone local on the day, who reads the water level and picks the falls that's running and empty.

Three things, mostly. They treat Khanom like a beach resort and rush it, when its whole gift is the slow day. They sleep through the sunrise — the one piece of light the town is actually famous for. And they keep looking for the Phuket version of everything, instead of letting a quieter coast be quieter.
